Your Voice, Your Choice #19 – Jack and Ella

Today we continue with a great new feature on Belles and Gals  – “Your Voice, Your Choice”. We introduce one of our favourite songs from a  country artist and then the artist tells us in turn about a song that has inspired them and has a special place in their heart. Today we feature UK country duo Jack and Ella.

Jack and Ella are one of our favourite duos here at Belles and Gals and this is already the 4th time they have featured. Previously I’ve interviewed the duo (read it here), reviewed their EP (read the review here) and featured the title track from the E.P. (here). Today I’ve decided to feature ‘Hometown’, what is possibly my highlight from the E.P. As you can see, Jack and Ella bring great energy to their performance and they certainly know how to handle a guitar! Interestingly, their E.P also features an acoustic version of this song, which while different, is every bit as good.

I’m delighted to be seeing Jack and Ella live for the first time next month at the ‘Corn on the Cob’ night in Hertford, so watch this space for more from the duo!

Jack has chosen ‘Love Like You Were Dying’ by Tim McGraw

Jack writes:

“People often want to sing about the easy stuff like meeting someone you fancy, or how drunk you were getting with your friends, but it’s always been songs about the heavier realities of life and tragic things that happen to all of us that have the biggest impact on me. Perhaps that’s because I’ve been able to relate to things like this since I was 17. This song follows a conversation between two people, one of whom has been diagnosed with cancer and is explaining how it’s changed his whole perspective on life for the better and that no matter how much time he has left, he’s truly living his life to its full potential, appreciating every moment, and being the best version of himself, hence the hook “Someday I hope you get the chance to live like you were dying”. In the face of such an awful circumstance, I can’t think of anything more inspiring! It’s one of my favourite songs in the world.”

Ella has chosen ‘Til Summer Comes Around’ by Keith Urban

Ella writes:

“This is one of my favourite songs of Keith’s and it massively inspires me from a guitarist’s point of view as well as a songwriter. If I was to ever write my favourite intro to a song, I hope it can be half as good as this one and I’d consider that a massive success!  The chorus is one of my favourite melodies, heartbreakingly beautiful and you really feel every word in his vocal.  I love the imagery created in the lyrics, of a summer romance, waiting for that person to come back around again, but the realities of life set in.  There is a live version with Keith and John Mayer (I’m a massive Mayer fangirl!) which no matter how many times I watch it (believe me, it’s lots) is equally as amazing as the first time.  I’ve yet to see anything that tops it in my eyes, it’s got to be close to perfection surely!”
