The first time I heard Brandi Carlile was on a music cruise many years ago but it wasn’t until I caught her and her full band (by pure chance) in Manchester’s ‘night & day’cafe when I really got the music. I love the blend of acoustic guitar with full on rock and vocals that just blow me away. Lyrically this song pulls me in from start to finish and is a real journey for the listener.
My second song choice is by another one of my all time favourite artists and is my all time favourite song “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan. No matter how many times I hear this song it kills me and makes me feel incredibly emotional. I was lucky enough to see Sarah in Manchester over a decade ago and this was her encore. So much depth and emotion without the need for musical gimmicks. Just piano and vocals with a hint of cello, pure and haunting. It will forever be my favourite song from my favourite album “Surfacing”.
