Your Voice, Your Choice #1 – Hannah Rose Platt
Delighted to begin a great new feature on Belles and Gals today – “Your Voice, Your Choice”. We introduce one of our favourite songs from a great female country artist and then the artist tells us in turn about a song that has inspired them and has a special place in their heart. We start today with acclaimed UK Americana artist Hannah Rose Platt.
In 2015, Hannah Rose Platt released her debut ‘Portraits’ album. The album quickly garnered acclaim, Fatea magazine stating, “This is a remarkable debut album” and Hannah being described as “Young, North of England Emmylou Harris” by the great Sid Griffin. Songs such as ‘1954’ and ‘Yellow Roses’ are simply beautiful, emotional numbers, while ‘Dancer’ will whirl you into the mind of a waitress, where you’ll share her hopes and dreams.
Now Hannah is back with a brand new single, the fantastic “Chanel and Cigarettes”. This new song is the first release from her upcoming second album and was inspired by a ghost story Hannah wrote as a child. The story has been given an ‘adult’ makeover for the song and our own Nathalie Larsen stated the following about ‘Chanel and Cigarettes’ in a recent review – “it weaves together a haunting yet alluring tale that creeps under your skin. It may be a song about infidelity with a dose of guilt and regret, but it sure is sexy as well.”
Hannah has chosen “Five Minutes” from the amazing Gretchen Peters.
My choice of song is ‘Five minutes’ by Gretchen Peters. One of my all time favourites, and in my opinion, the perfect song. I love the vivid imagery, Gretchen’s emotive and beautiful vocal, and the production; simple, supporting and sensitive to the story and the rhyme scheme is perfect. For me the real magic lies in the descriptive and visual lyrics, Gretchen Peters manages to take us on a journey though her character’s whole life, and envelop us completely in her world, her struggles, past hopes and losses, and then brings us right back to where we started, outside the café on a cigarette break. It’s heart-wrenching and beautiful.
