‘California Christmas’, the new festive E.P. from Lexi Lauren – out now!
Lexi Lauren has released her brand new E.P. ‘California Christmas’ today, an E.P. with a difference! The record contains four Christmas covers (each from a different decade) as well as the original title track. We caught up with Lexi to chat about the release!
Hi Lexi, It’s great to see you have a new Christmas themed EP out! How excited were you about this release?
I’m so freaking excited to release this Christmas EP!! This time of the year is absolutely my favorite, and I’m so pumped for everyone to hear what I’ve been working on!
You’ve chosen one song from each of the 1950’s, the 1960’s, the 1970’s and the 1980’s! Where did this idea come from and how difficult were the songs/artists to choose?
It was surprisingly easy to choose the covers for this EP! When I started thinking about which songs I wanted to cover, I instantly picked “Blue Christmas” and “Last Christmas”, because they’re two of my favorite Christmas songs. Once I realized one was from the 50s, and the other was from the 80s – I couldn’t not pick a song from the 60s and 70s! It all came together and I thought it was a super fun idea. When we went into the studio, we picked different instruments from the different decades – I wanted to make each song sound like the era it came from, while putting my own spin on it as well. I’m super excited with the way it turned out!
And if you had to choose one of those eras, which would you say is your favourite?
I get a lot of my style inspiration from looks in the 60s and 70s. I love bright colors, flowers, and anything that looks groovy – so I would definitely say the 70s!
You released ‘Hard Candy Christmas’ as a single last year! What is it about Christmas time that brings out the music in you?
Christmas is absolutely my favorite holiday ever! Getting to visit family, spending quality time together, putting up Christmas decorations, listening to Christmas music in the car… it’s the most wonderful time of the year!
On the EP is one original, ‘California Christmas’, the title track. Tell us how this song came about!
“California Christmas” is about missing your hometown during Christmastime. Last year was my first Christmas being away from home for the holidays, and it felt so strange, being so far away from everything that used to feel so familiar back in California! I came up with the idea to add lines from classic Christmas songs, and if you listen closely – you can catch about 10 different references! This song is really near and dear to my heart, and I’m so excited for everyone to finally hear it!
