The Truth Behind the Song #2 – Lucy Blu’s ‘Shelter’

Welcome to our brand new feature, ‘The Truth Behind the Song’. For the feature, we’ve asked a number of our favourite artists to give us in-depth piece about a song that has a special place in their heart. Today we feature the wonderful Lucy Blu, who tells us the moving and honest tale of the ‘truth’ behind ‘Shelter’.

“I wrote this song following a period of intense writers block. I’d barely come up with anything for weeks, and what I had come up with was un-inspired and pretty shoddy.

Looking back I can see that I’d got so bogged down with all of the ‘other’ things that you have to do as an independent artist, that it had started to impact my creativity and I was approaching my songwriting with the same frame of mind. I was too busy thinking about what people MIGHT want to hear, instead of what I wanted to say.

Around the same time, a close friend of mine was going through a really rough patch with their mental health. Listening to how they felt stopped me in my tracks, reminding me just how easy it is to dismiss those feelings, in myself and in others, as ‘just a bit down’ or ‘moody.’ Sometimes it’s easier to support others through their ‘bad days’ than to acknowledge your own.

It honestly continues to surprise me how many people are struggling, feeling inadequate, unloved, unimportant and more, each and every day. I wanted to let my friend know that they weren’t alone in what they were feeling, that we all have bad days, but that as long as we’re in it together, it can and does get easier.

I sat down and wrote Shelter in its entirety in one sitting – something pretty much unheard of with me. Once I’d found something that I passionately wanted to say again, the words and melody just flowed easily.

I’m lucky enough to have people around me that provide me with solace when I’m having a bad day, and Shelter was intended for and dedicated to anybody that can find comfort in its words. It might not be what people want to hear, but I’m pretty certain it’s something we all need to hear every once in a while.”

Take my hand

Lets just run

Leave the world behind for a time

Talk to me

Don’t be ashamed

Take a break from the mountains you climb

You don’t have to fight this war alone

We might be broken but together we are whole

I’ll be whatever you need to try and ease the pain

Your shelter from the rain

So you don’t have to be afraid

Tomorrow holds a brighter day, the clouds are gonna fade

But as long as they will stay I’ll be your shelter from the rain

I can see

You’re battle worn

You light yourself on fire to keep the others warm

But those scars

Wear them with pride

They will be the armour for the strength you have inside

Just another broken soul I see

Come to me and tell me all your troubles

Share your struggles with me

I’ll be whatever you need to try and ease the pain

Your shelter from the rain

So you don’t have to be afraid

Tomorrow holds a brighter day, the clouds are gonna fade

But as long as they will stay I’ll be your shelter from the rain

Take my hand

Lets just run

Leave this world behind for a time
