My Girl The River – Woods Behind Our House

My Girl The River consists of American songwriter and vocalist Kris Wilkinson Hughes and her British husband, bassist Joe Hughes. The duo met in 1998 and would soon form the highly successful ‘Cicero Buck’. ‘My Girl the River’ began in 2013 after writing ‘The Last Song’ and they formed a plan to record the album at home within just two days, using some of the talent that Kris had worked with over the years. The creation was the brilliant ‘This Ain’t No Fairytale’ album, which was released to much critical acclaim and a release that saw the duo invited to play at the Isle of Wight festival on the back of it. Although the album was recorded in just two days, the writing would take two and a half years and saw a very different roots sound, with a nod to such songwriters as Gretchen Peters, Willie Nelson and Townes van Zandt.

‘Woods Behind Our House’ (above) was the first single from the album and is a simply fantastic number, which takes a nostalgic look at a child’s memories. The song has a beautiful production and an enchanting timeless quality which will have you listening again and again. This is stunning.
