Jeannine Barry is one of the rising stars of the UK country scene and we’ve featured her on the site a number of times. Last week she announced some big news on social media, so we asked the lady herself if she’d like to tell us all about it and more!
Hi Jeannine, You announced just last week that you’re working on a new EP! This will be funded by a Pledgemusic campaign? Tell us all about how people can get involved.
Yes, that’s right! I’m very excited about this new EP. Everyone who likes what I do and wants to get involved can easily pre-order the EP on pledgemusic.com/projects/jbnewep. There are lots of other exciting perks available too such as a VIP experience at one of my gigs or a skype session and much more!
Can you tell us anything about the new EP yet? Can we expect all new songs? Songs we might have heard before? Fan favourites?
They are all new songs except one of the songs. Some who have attended any of my gigs recently will have heard it before. It’s one of my favourites and I’m extremely excited about how it is sounding already. It is still in production but recording it felt amazing as I’ve been constantly developing the song and it is great to see if now in full fruition. There is one song on it which I co-wrote with my good friend Lisa Wright who is an incredible singer/songwriter. I love to write with people that have a kind heart and are so very talented. Super excited about this one too. I won’t say anymore as some has to stay a secret until the release right? 😉
We loved your last release “Off the Hook” having featured a number of the songs on our site. You recorded the EP in Nashville. How was that experience?
That was an incredible experience and I often look back thinking about this wonderful time. It was particularly special to me because I had been dreaming about it for such a long time and suddenly it was there! I’m very proud of the EP and I will definitely go back to Nashville at some point!
The team at Belles and Gals has been lucky enough to attend a number of your live gigs, the most notable of which was at C2C 2016. That must have been such a buzz?!
Oh god, it was one the most fun gigs I’ve played so far! It was so much fun to be on that stage and to play to so many excited Country Music fans! What a buzz the whole festival always is and how amazing to have something like this over here! I love it and can’t wait for next year!!!
The UK country music scene is brilliant right now. How exciting is it to be part of this growing movement?
It is very exciting and I’m very excited to see where this is going or better said how this is going to develop further. It is a lot of fun to be part of the scene and help spread the word. It’s also a wonderful opportunity for British Country artists. I really enjoy doing my thing here and am going to continue riding this wave.
So what first prompted you to make the move into country music? Have you always dreamed of being a singer?
Yes, I’ve always wanted to be a singer. I have always been a singer. It’s been quite the journey for me because it took me a while to overcome some self doubt and insecurities. When I met my vocal coach David Lee Brewer a lot of things changed for me. He helped me see my potential and he pointed me in the direction. Once I started appreciating who I was I connected all the dots. I have always loved country music and that is what made me stand out and sound so different. It was a long process and a lot of work not only vocally but also emotionally. If you don’t believe in yourself you can’t go anywhere. I am still working with David and am so incredibly grateful to have him in my corner. Country music wasn’t so much a choice it is just who I am. And I am very proud of that. It is my journey and whether there is now a scene for country music here or not I’d be doing it anyway.
Tell us a little about how you go about writing a song?
This always varies. One of the songs on my new EP I’ve written on my own sitting on my bedroom floor without any instruments. Other songs I’ve written with other artists and we either come up with some great chords or write the lyrics and melody on top or sometimes there is melody idea and we put the song together from there.
If you could perform a duet with any other artist, a country artist or not, who would it be?
Possibly Pink. She has inspired me a great deal. She’s strong and just always does her thing regardless of what people say. I love that. I would be honoured to be on stage with her.
Tell us something random about yourself!
I am lip balm addicted. I get such dry lips when I don’t have lip balm.
So what are your plans for the coming weeks and months? Is it all about the new EP – we can’t wait!
My plans are to release the new EP and to continue to play out loads and build the fan base. Get the music out there. I have a headline show on August 5th in London which I am looking forward to. I am also thinking of touring the UK at some point. I am still writing as next year I would love to record an album. I love working with Justin Johnson who is producing this new EP. It would be amazing to do a full album next year. I can’t wait to share the new music with you! Make sure you pre-order the EP :o)
